With Matters release in October of 2022, companies started to push updates to existing devices and hubs to accommodate the new communication protocol requirements. Ever since Matter was announced, Aqara pledged Thread support for their new product line-up.
The company kept it’s promise and started delivering Matter support through firmware updates, the first being their latest gen M2 Hub which was updated to firmware 4.0.0 (beta). Older Aqara Hubs like the M1S, M1S 2nd Gen, E1, G3 & G2H Camera Hubs will follow suit after their M2 successor in Q2 of 2023.
This post is an overview of existing and upcoming Aqara devices and hubs which support or will support adding gadgets to third-party Matter apps.
How to enable Matter support for Aqara Devices?
Rather than pushing firmware updates to each individual Zigbee-based device in their product range, Aqara chose to bridge the gap to Matter by updating the firmware on their proprietary hubs already installed in users’ homes.
Existing devices will continue to communicate over Zigbee to their mother hub, which will handle the direct onboarding to third-party Matter apps like Apple HomeKit, Google Home or Samsung SmartThings.
New devices will support Thread or Wi-Fi instead of Zigbee out-of-the-box, starting with the new Thread-based Door & Window Sensor P2 and Motion and Light Sensor P2 coming out in Q2 or 2023.
Some conditions must be met before Matter support can be enabled by end users:
- Devices that must be on the same local network before Matter onboarding:
- Aqara Hub (M2)
- Mobile Phone (Aqara Home App)
- Matter Controllers (HomePod, Google Nest Hub etc.)
- Aqara Home App must be updated to version 3.0.8 or later
- Aqara Hub (M2) must be updated to version 4.0.0 (Beta)
- Matter Controllers must be updated to their respective Matter version

Note: Samsung SmartThings and Amazon Alexa have not yet pushed Matter updates to their controllers.
Supported Devices
Aqara offers one of the most complete and diverse smart home ecosystems through a variety of devices, covering almost every aspect a modern automated home might need. Ranging from simple switches, plugs and motion sensors to curtain controllers and radiator valves.
In their first firmware update, the company bumped up over 40 different Zigbee-based devices to Matter.
Aqara Hubs
Aqara M2 Hub
The first device which already received Matter support is their latest M2 Hub, currently sold for ~$59.99 online. The M2 supports up to 128 end devices and has a built-in 360° infrared blaster to control dumb electronics like fans, air conditioners or TVs. The latest gen Aqara hub is fitted with a built-in speaker that can be used in a variety of ways: security alerts, doorbell, alarm clock, and configurable ringtones.
Besides Wi-Fi connectivity, the M2 is also equipped with a RJ45 Ethernet jack which can be used for a LAN connection.
Other hubs which will be updated to Matter in the following months are the M1S/M2S 2nd Gen, E1 Hub, G2H Camera Hub & G3 Camera Hub.

Aside from the existing device from the Aqara ecosystem that are being bumped to Matter, Aqara is in the process of releasing a new product line-up that will support Matter directly. Summary
This is the complete list of Aqara devices than are currently bumped to Matter via their M2 Hub update. They can also be added to your Matter Controller with other Aqara Hubs, when the update arrives for them.
It is important to understand that existing devices will remain as Zigbee devices, which are being bridged to Matter via their mother hub. No firmware update is done on the devices themselves.
Known Limitations
- Amazon and SmartThings do not support the “Bridge” device type. Therefore, the M2 can currently only be used together with Apple Home and Google Home.
- Google Home requires a 2nd generation Nest Hub or Nest Hub Max to be installed on the same network.
- Apple HomeKit requires a HomePod or Apple TV 4K to be installed on the same network.
- Aqara M2 Hub does not take over as a Thread Border Router, it remains a Zigbee Hub
Led strip T1 is based on zigbee not thread or wifi.
